Arctic adventures in the land of polar bears
Svalbard hosts the northernmost city in the world and an incredible heritage from the brave explorers that first ventured to this incredible land, full of dangers and extreme conditions.

Skua, after being a guest of Better Moments AS had the chance to make a joint venture, acquiring this incredible company; one of the strongest for the wildlife related activities in Svalbard.

You can find the high standard created by Better Moments with our “pinch of salt” related to the experience and knowledge of wildlife; we are truly proud to present to you our idea of Svalbard activities and travels.

Here, special animals inhabit land, sky and sea, just like polar bear, walrus, little auk, grey phalarope, svalbard reindeer, arctic fox and the blue whale.

As you embark on a journey with Skua and Better Moments, prepare to immerse yourself in the untouched wilderness of Svalbard. Whether gliding over the snow on a snowmobile or cruising the Arctic waters in a RIB boat, the experience promises to be both thrilling and unforgettable, revealing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Arctic landscape.

In Svalbard, nestled within the village of Longyearbyen, lies Better Moments, a unique venture that offers extraordinary Arctic adventures. Since its inception in 2013, Better Moments has evolved into a premier provider of bespoke experiences, ranging from snowmobile expeditions to RIB boat trips along the west coast of Spitsbergen. The heart of the operations is the historic Kuhaugen venue, located just outside Longyearbyen. This former dynamite storage, transformed into an “explorers club,” is now a hub for social events, lectures, and cultural gatherings. Decorated to honor the great polar expeditions of the 19th and 20th centuries, the venue offers a unique glimpse into the history of Arctic exploration.

Glaciers

Covering nearly 60% of Svalbard, glaciers are vast ice masses shaping the landscape and feeding fjords. They provide critical habitats for polar bears and seals.

Rough Cliffs

Svalbard's rugged cliffs host numerous seabird colonies, including Brünnich's guillemots and kittiwakes. These cliffs offer dramatic views and vital nesting sites for marine birds.

Tundra

The tundra, with its permafrost and low vegetation, bursts into life during summer. It supports reindeer, arctic foxes, and migratory birds, thriving in the brief but vibrant season.

Winter (November - March)

The main draw in winter is their snowmobile trips, which are limited to a maximum of six participants to ensure a personalized experience. These trips provide a rare opportunity to traverse the pristine Arctic landscape, exploring hidden glaciers and remote valleys under the guidance of expert wildlife guides. Guests are fully equipped with top-of-the-line gear, including snowmobile suits, helmets, and gloves, ensuring both safety and comfort in the harsh polar environment.Winter in Svalbard is a time of dramatic transitions and breathtaking natural phenomena. November transitions into the dark season, limiting activities as boat use ceases and snowmobile tours await sufficient snow. By December, the dark season is in full swing, with snowmobile tours kicking off as soon as the snow arrives, and the unique opportunity to hunt for the daytime Aurora Borealis adds to the winter magic.January is the final month of the polar night, with the sun still below the horizon. Snow covers the landscape, enabling shorter snowmobile tours and offering the unique experience of witnessing the daytime Aurora Borealis on the "Catching the Light – Aurora Borealis" tours. As February arrives, the sun begins its return, casting long shadows and painting the snow with pink pastels. This increase in daylight allows for extended snowmobile tours and exploration of historical sites and uninhabited areas. March continues this trend, with vivid colors and nearly an hour more daylight each day, marking the last chance to see the Aurora before the midnight sun takes over.

Spring (April - May)

Spring in Svalbard heralds the return of the midnight sun and the awakening of the Arctic landscape. April sees the sun rising continuously for the next four months, transforming the "Catching the Light" tours to focus on the midnight sun and its burning colors on the horizon. Migratory birds begin to return, signaling the end of the slow, silent winter. By May, the fjords open up for boat trips, walrus safaris, and wildlife tours, with snowmobiles still in use in early spring before the snow melts completely. The valleys begin to shed their snow, making way for the vibrant life of spring.

Summer (June - August)

Summer in Svalbard is a season of continuous daylight and bustling wildlife activity. June brings the midnight sun in full force, melting away the remnants of winter. Birds are busy nesting, and larger migrating whales come closer to the shores, visible from boat trips. Kayak trips among the icebergs in front of the Svea glacier become a highlight. July continues this activity with birds hatching, flowers blooming, and the ocean teeming with life. Snowmobile tours give way to hiking expeditions and unique wildlife observations, such as the bird jumping event in Tryghamna. August marks the end of summer, with longer shadows and approaching nights, as wildlife begins to prepare for departure. The month still offers vibrant wildlife tours and kayak trips, with a focus on the stunning landscape photography opportunities. In the summer, we shift the focus to the sea, offering closed RIB boat trips that navigate the icy waters of the Isfjord and the West Coast of Spitsbergen. These excursions, accommodating up to twelve people, are designed for quick and comfortable travel, enabling guests to reach spectacular destinations swiftly. With ample space for equipment and the use of dinghies for shore landings, these trips are perfect for photography, film crews, and adventurous explorers alike.

Autumn (September - October)

Autumn in Svalbard is a time of transition from the midnight sun to the encroaching darkness of winter. September sees the last of the midnight sun, with longer shadows and the first sugar-coated mountains appearing. This is an ideal time for landscape photography, with the unique light of sunrise and sunset combined. Wildlife tours continue, though the walrus begin their migration, ending the walrus safaris by mid-month. October brings the final sunsets of the year, leaving only twilight during the day and marking the approach of winter. The exciting light conditions persist until the end of the month, when the sun sets for the last time.
